Melody is down with high fever that goes up and down like the NY Index!

her fever shot up to 39.8C on Friday night. But because I had class yesterday, I left her in the care of my maid. But my maid only know how to give her fever medication, didn't know what else to do.

When I got home yesterday after class, her fever went up to 40C!!!

So we spent much time in the room, I had to sponge her with icy water to bring down the temperature. She also took fever medication. then it went down to 38C.

I made lemon honey drink for her to soothe her sore throat. That helps alot. Honey helps to lubricate the throat while lemon provided the vitamins she needed.

I also made Honey Chrysanthemum drink for her. And she had it cold. She drank 1 cup of this every 2 hours. In between she also took plain water.

Of course with all these sugary sweet drinks, sore throat was okay, but phelgm started to build up. In most cases, I know many parents do not allow their kids to take sweet stuff due to this. But this was something I learn from the specialist doctor Dr Da Costa.

His advice was : Cure one ailment at a time. Cure the most painful one. then the next.

Which is the sore throat. Feed with honey only mixed with Lemon or Grapefruit juice. Or honey with Chrysanthemum flowers drink.

Then once sore throat is okay, then work on the cough and phelgm. once sore throat is soothed, coughing lessens. If there is lots of phelgm build up, drinks lots of water, it will disperse it. Ask any GP for cough medication that breaks down phelgm to be pass out in poo!

Smile

Dr Da Costa tells me every cycle of sore throat, cough, flu takes 2 weeks to fully recover. Your child may look and feel okay after 1 week of medication. But internally, your child's immune system is low and body is still in recovery.

Melody was sick during the 1 week September school holidays. And it dragged on when school reopens. Then her sister got sick and pass the virus to her again.

One thing I learnt from Dr Da Costa was : never stop what you are doing.
Never think its never going to end. Be persistent in care giving for your sick child for that 2 weeks. After that, you can take all the tonics in chinese or herbal way.

If your child is not cured after 2 weeks, it may develop into asthma and that's a life long illness that cannot be cured. Only prevent.

Dr Da Costa is also my doctor. I see him for my asthma.

Gina,

thanks for sharing.

It's the Dow Jones Index, not NY index Wink

The Dow Jones is the equivalent to what we have here :STI Index. Of course DJ is much much bigger.

Hi Gina,

I gave my dd isotonic drink (H-Two-O) the last time she had high fever. My friend working as a nurse taught me that.

Hi, Just want to pass this on re: PPA in cough meds. US FDA has been recalling all OTC cough meds containing PPA and many meds flouting out there still contain this. Not sure if how it is back in Asia. I have to admit, I still have stuff in my med counter that has PPA, I have been wanting to clear them before cold and flu season hit...

Thanks Gina for your trick. My ped just told me there's nothing much to do when kids get the virus except keep them hydrated. He told me giving medicine only makes me feel better. I never thought of using towels to cool the body, my mom used to do that, thanks for reminding me.

Also, my pharmacist friend told me that some, especially red food coloring in children's cough medicine can cause hyperactive. I'm not sure how true this is. Any take on this, anyone?

Regards,
June

hey June

sometimes old ah ma's remedy still works the best! Smile the cold sponging is the only method I know by hard that works. yes, during the initial stage, there is nothing much one can do for a child except to bring the fever down and to soothe the child.

the best medicine was REST and WATER. The medication given to young kids was to help their body to dispel the phelgm, soothe the throat.

As adults, we know how to cough out , spit out the phelgm. Most kids can't figure that out and may ended up choking when they hold back and swallow the phelgm.

About food colouring that causes hyperactive kids, I think that is only for kids who are allergic to food colouring or artificial sweeteners. Like my neigbhour's son. He cannot take cough/flu mixture. So his mom had to pound the cough pills into powder, mix into honey to feed him.

Gina, get the cool mats (selling at NTUC & many places) that has water/gel inside. KK nurses tested it out about 8 years ago (that was the time my dd was born & I started taking keen interest in child issues). Seems that the temperature goes down after lying on it for 15 - 20 minutes. It really works. I let my kids use it when they are down with fever. I even let them sleep on it to cool their body down. With this, you don't have to sponge much except when very high fever.
